Q: Effectiveness of Zanaflex for chronic migraines?

I would greatly appreciate any feedback on those of you who have tried, are currently taking, or know someone with experience in taking Zanaflex for management of chronic migraines.  I was prescribed this today, with my first dose tonight.  As it is a muscle relaxant, I do expect some drowsiness, which I hope to acclimate to eventually.

My migraines have been plaguing me for approximately 12 years, but didn't become unmanageable until after my 3rd seizure over a year ago (no major head/brain injury, but something was affected).

I would just like to know of real-world experiences and efficacy for chronic migraine cases such as mine.  I do realize migraine relief is not the true indication for this med, however, I was told it is often a very successful therapy in patients such as myself. I would be grateful for anything that allows me to fully devote time back to work.

I look forward to your feedback.

Thank you for your time!

Regards,

Lauren

Hi Lauren,

Zanaflex is an antispasmotic that can be used for Migraine prevention. I haven't used it, but there are some members on our discussion forum who have. You may find the interaction on the forum to be quite helpful. To get to the forum, just look for the orange box marked "Manage" and click on the Migraine Forums link. I hope this helps

My neurologist put me on Zanaflex two years ago. He said he had over 2,000 patients on it and it was one of his main meds for migraine. He thought this was due to poor sleep on the part of migraineurs. You take it at bedtime because it will knock you out. My problem with it was dryness as a side affect. I would wake up with dry mouth. I took it for several months but it did not help me at all. However nothing else has helped either. Hope it helps you.

Thanks so much.  I have not had much success with it since I've started.  Like you, nothing has worked for me either.  It's getting very frustrating.  Best of luck to you in finding something that does work.

I have been on Zanaflex 10mg for quite a while and find it doesn't help prevent my migraines.  It does make me tired but I still wake up in the middle of the night.   I tried

20 mg and it made me feel like a zombie the next day.   The makers of Zanaflex claim the brand capsule works longer but you'd have to ask the doctor.

Good luck in your seach!
