Q: Suffering from Migraines with sensity from smells with no relief for 20 years, need help

I have gone to 3 Neurologist and I take topomax, gabapentin, cymbalta, and get botox, plus a muscle relaxant, and smells are depillitating. I suffer so much from smells just entering a room with someone with perfume on that I either have to leave or stuff tissue up my nostril,or get a migraine. I ended in tears when the Dr. today said the MRI showed nothing with my sinuses today. I am recieving my botox shot next wk. and I feel lost with this pain I suffer daily. I wake up Daily with Migraine and Pain in my sinuses Dr's have said with Migraine treatment that the sensity would go away, it hasn't.  If anything it has gotten worse.  I now am an a embarrassment to my 12 yr old daughter.  I dread the holidays.  I suffer with light sensitivy.  I can't take imitrex or anything similar it makes me vomit, and Dr's don't want me to take much tylenol so I am to suffer through the pain constantly.  I cant.... HELP ME PLEASE

Scents are a very common trigger for migraines.

You've been to neuros, but have you been to a Migraine Specialist?  It is really worth it.  Check out the article, Migraine Specialists: What's so Special?

I went through three neuros before my migraine specialist, and basically wasted 2 1/2 years on doctors who just weren't qualified to handle a case as complicated as mine.  Here is a list of our patient recommended specialists

A true migraine specialist will be better able to help you.  Don't be afraid to travel.  I live in NYC area, and my specialist is in Philadelphia.  It's worth all the time and money for travel, because he's fantastic.

And in truth, when you find the right preventive medication, you won't be so sensitive to smells.  It's just a question of finding the right one.

As for abortives, if you throw them up there are injectable forms of Imitrex, and nasal sprays like Zomig.  A migraine specialist should be able to help you find a good abortive med.

Your neuro is right about the tyelnol.  Taking any medication too frequently runs the risk of Medication Overuse Headache.  I know it stinks.  We are in constant pain, and we can't take painkillers.  Horrible irony.  Check out this article on MOH
