what should I do if my doctor is refusing to give me a medication that i need
Oxycontin is the only drug that helps my chronic migraines, but my doctor took me off, and now I am much worse, before I was able to work sometime still, and the pain wasn't near as bad, I am miserable, so I asked to be put back on and my doctor refused, now I don't know what to do.
Hi INPAINALLDAY,
I'm sorry to hear you are in pain, but oxycontin may only mask the pain of Migraine disease. Long term use may lead to Medication overuse headache(MOH) and/or Transformed Headache (TM) and even changes in brain chemistry with long term use. The good news is there are over 100 medications that are available to treat Migraine disease. Try not to lose hope.
MOH occurs when we take certain OTC and/or prescription medications more than two to three days a week. No Migraine prevention drug on earth will work if we have MOH. Read this for more information: Medication Oversue Headache -When the Remedy Backfires.
Our risk for Transformed Migraine may increase with the use of opioids. This important information is in this article: Transformed Migraine - Risk Increased by Some Medications.
The bottom line here is find a new doctor, one who will help you find the right treatment plan and diagnosis. This may mean a Migraine specialsit, rather than a neurologist because it is difficult for them to be an experts in any one area because they treatss so many different conditions like MS, epilepsy, stroke and Parkinson's. A Migrine/headache specialist treats one area - our Migraines and headaches. You can find a specialist on our patient recommended specialist list HERE.
I hope this helps.
Nancy
