Q: Can an optical migraine make the room seem to spin?

Three times, upon first awakening, I've had what my nurse practitioner called optical migraines.  They last only a minute.  Twice it looked like the room was rotating from right to left.  Once I saw concentric circular bands; every other one was staying still, and the rest were slowly rotating.  There was no headache, and they went away.  These do not sound like the aura of lights I've seen described on migraine websites.  Do you know what could cause these visions?  By the way, the only meds I take are 1 Nexium per day & occasional Advil.  My 89 year old mother has macular degeneration.

Thanks!

Hi Susan,

The symptoms you describe could certainly be part of the aura phase of a Migraine attack. And dizziness may be part of aura for some people. However, we are not medical professionals so cannot diagnose you online and you wouldn't want that anyway. We can give you information. How does that sound?

One of the most important things is to get an accurate diagnosis. To simplify matters and make it easier for people to get information and treatment, doctors usually go by the gold standard for diagnosis, the International Headache Society's International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd Edition (ICHD-II). Under ICHD-II, there is no diagnosis of "optical Migraine." We do see it used, but doctors use it differently, so it really doesn't tell anyone what type of Migraine you actually have. You can read more about this in Ocular, Optical, and Opthalmic Migraines and The Type of Migraine Does Matter.

Good luck

Nancy
