MLEBEAU,
Know that almost everyone on this site has felt how you feel right now. You are not alone!
Some of the best things you can do for yourself - you are already doing! Educate yourself! Read! Learn! Ask Questions! This is why there is a site like this!
The best advise I think anyone here can give you is don't give up! Keep trying to find answers for yourself - and if that means firing a few doctors, then so be it! You deserve the best medical treatment there is!
You didn't mention in your question how long you have been on your current preventive plan, but it can take up to three month to notice any benefits from it.
Now, onto the serious stuff. You should NOT have to wait six months for an appointment with your doctor. Most follow ups are done every 6 weeks to maybe every three months. It may be time for you to check out a Migraine Specialist.
Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.
As far as family and friends not understanding - been there! Done that! And it is the most frustrating thing in the world! Teri Robert came up with some really great information for friends and family who "don't get it" which I strongly encourage you to share with anyone you care about. Migraine and Headache Information for Those Who "Don't Get It" will explain that Migraine is NOT just a headache and that it is a genetic neurological disease for which there currently, is no cure.
You mention you have a "daily headache that turns into Migraine"....are you sure this is not Medication Overuse Headache, aka rebound? Take a look at Medication Overuse Headache: When Remedy Backfires. If this is the case, preventives will not work until the MOH cycle is broken.
Have you tried Midrin to abort Migraine? It is commonly used in Migraineurs who cannot take triptans. If you have not tried it, ask your doctor about it.
You mention you recently had a hysterectomy? This can make Migraine better, worse, or have no affect at all. No one can say one way or another how hysterectomy affects Migraine, since everyone is different.
I know you're going through a rough time. If you'd like some additional support, come join our discussion forum. You'll need to register again once there because it's a separate membership database, but you can use the same member name, email address, and password that you used here. You can find our forum at http://forums.healthcentral.com/discussion/migraine/forums.
Good Luck! I hope to see you over on the forum!
