Q: Is there anything that will shorten the life of the migraine during the aura phase that isn't a RX?

My sister has migraines but hasn't been to the doctor about them yet. She lives in a very remote small town and doesn't have health insurance and I would like to give her suggestions as to what she can take or do that will help her out. She is getting tingling and numbness in her extremities, wavy lines, vertigo, etc and obviously knows a migraine headache is coming shortly. Is there anything she can take at the first signs of an attack to shorten/relieve it or is she basically stuck until she reaches the headache part of the attack and resort to Excedrin Migraine? I can't just give her my Imitrex pills and would like to have more helpful information than "go see your doctor who costs an arm and a leg and a boatride".

Thanks!

Hi theresadz,

I can understand how much you want to help your sister, but it is really important not to self diagnose or self treat. I understand about living in a remote area and not having health insurance, but she really heeds to see a doctor about her head and numbness. Giving her the wrong information and/or medication could put her health in danger.

There is a program sponsored by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration that your sister might want to look into. She can find that information  in this article:

HRSA Health Centers Can Provide Basic Migraine Care.

Good luck to you and your sister,

Nancy

Thanks for the link! I obviously would never give her any medication that wasn't meant for her and I specifically told her that the numbness she was experiencing could be more than a migraine and urged her to see a doctor as soon as possible.

I looked at the link you sent to find what would be the closest health center to her and unfortunately it is a 2 hour drive not including the 45 minute ferry ride she would need to take to get to the mainland. The ferry ticket and gas alone would be about just as much as a check up at her regular doctor, but hopefully she can utilize the information and get checked out.
