Q: Have you ever been completely overtreated and mistreated for a 3 week duration migraine?

My daughter was just released after a 2 week hospitalization for the worst migraine of her life.  She is past week 3 and the pain is now at about a level 6-7 but the vertigo (which is new to this headache) is very bothersome and frustrating.  While in hospital, she was over medicated to the point where she was hard to rouse/respond.  Given a cocktail of IV meds-dilaudid, morphine, percoset, ergotamine, decadron, depacon, nortryptilene, topamax, lyrica, neurontin, mag sulfate, beta blockers, phenergan,  antivert and many others.  Every day the drug regimen would switch.  Her veins in both arms have totally collapsed and her arms are bruised and swollen.  2 CT scans and # different types of MRI scans were all negative.  She was eventually transferred to a teaching hospital and got on the headache service where they gave her a thorazine drip, doxycycline and singulair.  She was discharged on the doxy and singulair along with B2 and magnesium and nortrypt at bedtime.  No pain meds at all. So far she's still in a lot of pain.  Her vertigo is severe.  She cannot drive and had to withdraw from college for the rest of this semester.  Her new doc said the vertigo SHOULD gradually recede and the same for the migraine.  Anyone with an experience like this?  I do not understand the use of singulair and an antibiotic for the treatment.  Could the vertigo be due to something else like an inner ear problem?  When I broached that possibility, the docs have all said that dizziness is associated with migraine.  However, in all her years as a migrainer sufferer, this is the 1st time vertigo has been present.  As a very concerned parent, I would appreciate any info and help you have to offer.

Andrea,

We really can't second guess the doctors who treated her. We don't know the situation well enough, and even our doctor who helps us out with these questions can't say what medications are right just by viewing the information presented online.

I saw in your other questions that we're supposed to know some of your daughter's background, but I can't find any other questions beyond the two you posted today, and no shareposts. So, I don't know how old your daughter is or anything else about her.

Certainly, if the vertigo is a new symptom, other possible causes for it SHOULD be ruled out. Attributing new symptoms to Migraine without ruling out other causes is simply not acceptable.

If her current doctors aren't able to help, you might want to look HERE for our listing of patient recommended Migraine specialists.

Please keep us posted? I'll be away at a conference for a week, but will be checking in.
