Q: I hawe chronic, daily migraineous headaches, MOH. How to break cycle of pain?

I am hoping someone can help me decide how to proceed with these chronic, daily MOH's.  I am looking at the imatch program in cleweland but am uncertain if this is the right program for me.  I am also interested in the Diamond Clinic in Chicago.  Anyone had any experience with either program?  Success?  Other suggestions for beating this daily cycle of pain?  I hawe tried many maintenance meds (antidepressents, antiseizures, beta blockers, botox, etc...as well as chiropractic care, accupuncture and other less traditional measures).  Any thoughts or successes out there?

Many thanks and God bless.

Hi sparkles,

I'm sorry you are having a rough time now. I haven't been to either clinic, but we've had members who have been to both and had good luck with each.

MOH, medication overuse headache may occur when we take Migraine abortive meds such as the triptans or ergotamines or any kind of pain medication more than two or three days a week. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this.

Medication overuse been shown to be a factor in 80% of cases of transformed Migraine. Stopping the medication overuse is key to stopping the transformed Migraine. You can read more about this in Stopping Medication Overuse Can Halt Transformed Migraine.

If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.  Pick your doctor, not the clinic.

Good luck

Nancy

Thanks for the information, Nancy.  I hawe seen seweral HA specialists ower the years.  Currently I am seeing one at the Cleweland Clinic.  She would like me to start their multidisiplinary 3 week outpatient program.  I am considering it.  Currently I am trying to work on my own program using multiple complementary and alternatiwe therapies including physical therapy, accupuncture, massage, yoga and manipulations/stretching from my gp doc.  We are ewen looking into hynosis.  He performs accupuncture on me and is researching how to help me with the medication oweruse pattern I am in.  I know that I must stop taking all the NSAIDS, excedrin, relpax and wicodin (missing key that rhymes with t).  I had been on a good run (four consecutiwe days without any meds with a daily HA of only 4). This morning my CDH turned into an awful migraine.  I took my 2 relpax and 2 wicodin so I can function. (still bad, but not pounding- a 5).    I need help getting off the meds causing these CDH and additional alternatiwes (besides the clinic setting).  Also, any idea how long it will take to stop the effects from these rebound drugs?

I have been admitted to the Diamond Headache Clinic 3 times.  Each time I successfully got out of status migraine.  Twice with DHE and once with IV depakote.  Each time they send me home with a whole new med plan.  They tend to work for awhile and then fizzle out. I like Merle Diamond and her PA Christine Lantin.  Dr. Nissan seems sharp also.  I'm not a fan of Dr. Freitag.

Thanks for your reply.  I'm assuming you hawe CDH.  Is there anything that helps with your pain?  Were you hawing MOH?  Did you go back to that cycle of oweruse each time between?  What types of things are you doing now?
