Hi migraine sufferer,
We are talking about a couple of different drug classes here. Imitrex is a triptan medication that aborts a Migraine attack. This medication is taken at the first sign of a Migraine and only to be used 2 days per week.
Lyrica is an neuronal stabilizing agents (antiseizure medication) with an interesting side note. It is the first medication of its type to be classfied by as a Schedule V controlled substance due to excessive drowsiness. It has been FDA approved for Fibromyalgia prevention and is used "off label" for Migraine prevention.
Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) has been FDA approved for Chronic Migraine, meaning someone with more that 15 Migraines a month could use Botox as a preventive medication.
I really can't tell you what medication is safer, since all medications come with warnings and potential side effects. These are questions and concerns you can talk with your doctor about. But this article Preventive, Abortive, and Rescue Medications - What's the Difference? may help explain things a bit better.
Good luck
Nancy
