Q: Has anyone had Thorazine infusions for headaches that won't stop?

Has anyone has Thorazine infusions for headaches that won't stop?  And if any, what are the side effects?

I have had this headache now for 25 days.  I have tried the Medrol pak, Zanaflex, and Relpax. I take Topamax daily as a preventative.  Nothing is working.  Now the doctor is wanting to try a Thorazine infusion.

My headache is generally on the right side of my head and I get a lot of ice pick pains.

Hi Becky Lee,

It is important to break the current cycle you are in. We have heard it used before, but there are other infusion therapies that are used more commonly. We have an article you can read about here: IV Treatment of Refractory Migraines.

Good luck

Nancy

I have not had infusions but my doctor gave me Thorazine suppositories as an abortive.  Unfortunately I am resistant to many meds and it had absolutely no effect on me whatsoever.  :(

I have only toradol as an abortive; when it doesn't work, I take Thorazine at night for 3 days.  I have had it in the hospital, and it does work for me.  I now use the meds I was getting in the hosp. and infusion center at home.  I am able to self-inject as long as I don't wait too long.

My best to you.

Just wanted to let everyone know what happened when I did go get the Thorazine infusion.  I kept asking everyone what the side effects would be and kept getting no response.  Even when I got to the infusion center the tech said that every time these were ordered the paitient usually called in the day of the appointment and said the headache was gone.  So, no one seemed to know the side effects.

Well, let me tell you something, I don't know that I will ever do that again.  The infusion took about 20 minutes and they let me leave.  I didn't even live in the same town.  Luckily my Mom had driven me.  As I walked to the car, I felt very strange and lightheaded.  It was hard for me to describe because I had never felt this way before.  Every time I tried to walk, I felt like I was going to faint.  I finally just laid down in the car went to sleep.  About 2 hours later I tried to walk again and the same thing happened.  My Mom was worried about leaving town and heading home so she went by the doctor's office to let know what was happening.  They checked my blood pressure and it was 85/60.  Evidently, you should be watched after the infusion for a while to check for the serious drop in blood pressure.

Becky,

How did they do this "infusion?" Where was the Thorazine injected? And, where was this infusion administered? A hospital? Doctor's office?

An infusion generally takes longer than 20 minutes. Plus, with an injection of a medication such as Thorazine, they should have asked if someone was with you to drive you home before they gave you the medication.

The infusion was done through an IV and it took about 20 minutes and it was done at the hospital.  And , yes, luckily I did have someone to drive me.

Have you ever thought that it could be the preventative meds. (Topamax) that could be the cause of your headache?  How long have you been on the med.  I've been on this same med. for more than two months and my headaches have not stopped.  I suffered a grand-mal seizure in July and was put on this med. by my Doctor.  I think that this Medications could be the cause of this.

I have thought of that but I am afraid to stop taking it because this headache that I have is not a Migraine and the Topamax is my Migraine preventative.  If I stop I'm afraid the migraines will start more frequently.  I really don't know what to do.  It has now been 67 days with this same headache.  I go to bed with it and wake up with it.  I cannot live this way much longer.

I know how you feel.  I've had a headache just about the same amount of days as you and I know for a fact that it has to be the Topamax because before my seizure I did not suffer from headaches.  There has to be some other preventative medication your doctor can put you on.  Topamax is not working for you.  That would be my guess.

Thanks for all your help and I would be willing to think that the Topamax might be the problem but I have on it for 4 years.  I am afraid to stop it without knowing a little more.
