Q: I'm 46 and started having menstrual migraines at 30. 2 months ago they got worse at 4-6 per wk. Working with dr's, trying different alternatives and meds with little help. Is Hysterectomy best idea?

I've been the "poster child" for female issues for years. I did test trials for PMS drugs back in the 70's, was one of the first diagnosed with Polycystic Ovaries in the 80's, and was written up in medical journals in the 90's because my Fallopian Tubes are 2 cm longer with my ovaries being out equally as far. Interestingly enough I had 2 children without fertility drugs after being told that I would have a 20% chance of having children at all and that would be with the drugs. As for the aforementioned, I've had a battery of tests done by my Neuro, Primary Physician Opthamalogist, and Ob/Gyn and am yet to see an Endo as well as some other physicians. Regardless, this condition has cost me my job and soon to be my house. Thankfully I have a wonderful husband, kids, and family that is very supportive but it has put a real strain on things. Granted I do have other health issues and my mother and grandmother did go into early menopause but this is a bit much.

Hi,

I know it feels like you have seen every doctor known to man, but have you seen the expert who deals with menstrual migraines? That would be a Migraine specialist - not an endo, OBY/GYN, PCP - all of whom may be fine doctors, but not the best for treating Migraines.

See here's the thing, and you can look at it like this -  when a pipe under your kitchen sink breaks you call the expert - a plumber. You might call a handyman who can repair it, then fix the drain, the cabinets and paint the room if needed. But he isn't the expert you need for your broken pipe. Neurologists may be fine doctors, but aren't experts in any one area because they treat so many different conditions like MS, stroke, and epilepsy. A Migraine specialist is a expert who only treats one condition - ours -  Migraine and headache disorders all day every day. Keep reading for information on: Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? Then you can take a look for a Migraine specialist on our Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

list. Does that make sense?

Good luck, and please let us know how you make out.
