Q: Migraine treatment

How do i treat migraines that my 12 year old gets mostly while playing tackle football. The migraines are usually followed with nausea and vomiting.

Roosevelt,

 

It sounds as if these Migraines may be triggered by exertion. It could also be that your child gets dehydrated playing football, and dehydration can be a Migraine trigger.

 

Talk with your doctor. If it's dehydration, sports drinks before a game might help prevent these Migraines. If it's the exertion, your doctor can recommend something to take before the game to prevent the Migraines.

I don't know about for a child, but I'm a 42 year old woman who has migraines since about age 16.  I've suffered horrible headaches over the years.  Nothing works on the pain, so I need to work on prevention....the following has been an absolute lifesaver for me:  Piroxicam, Lexapro and Inderal.  I went from migraines every single week to maybe 1 every other month.
