Q: Hi, I really need some help regarding my migraines or what I think are migraines...

I often get blind spots in my vision, blurry vision, dizziness, fuzzy in the head feelings, flickering lights, confusion, all of which I have looked up online and came to the conclusion that they sound like migraine aura symptoms, sometimes these are not followed by a throbbing headache but they can last all day, and even when a headache develops I still have the other symptoms lingering around, are those still aura? I thought aura could only last for under 60mins...Im so confused and feel very lost with all these symptoms....and I have had an MRI and EKGand all was normal, please please help :(

Audrey,

What kind of doctor did you see? Your family doctor? He may not have known enough about Migraine to answer your questions, but if that's the case, he really should have said so.

In general, aura lasts 60 minutes or less, and the aura symptoms fade when the headache phase starts. That's in general, and it may not always happen that way.

Yes, it does sound like Migraine with aura, but that has to be confirmed by a doctor.

You might also want to take a look at Migraine with Aura - The Basics.

Tests such as MRI are generally "normal" in Migraineurs. That's one of the problems. There is no diagnostic test to confirm Migraine disease. Diagnosis is done by reviewing your and your family's medical history, reviewing your symptoms, and ruling out other causes of those symptoms.

You didn't say which medication your doctor gave you, but its not working doesn't mean you're not having Migraines. None of the medications work for everyone.

Hope this helps,

Teri

Hi Audrey!

Your best bet would be to go to a doctor and get diagnosed. I can give you a few links that may help you understand your symptoms better, if they are, in fact, Migraine.

Hi, thanks so much for your answer, I have been to my doctor and he gave me some pills to take when I get these symptoms, but they do not work, so I believe he thought they were migraines, but he didnt really answer all my questions regarding my aura symptoms which is why i was hoping to find some help here from you all :) I am really worried and concerned about how long my visual symptoms last....and I have seen an eye doctor and all was fine, so I am left feeling very helpless at the moment...

I just thought I would chime in here also.  I have had migraines for over 13 years (and I'm almost 31), so I've lived with them a long time.  A couple of times a year I get them so bad, where my vision is totally blurry and my jaw and muscles in my neck lock up.  Talk about scary, scary!

The last time this happened, I was in the car, driving myself home from a convetion.  Not good.  I got back into town and I called my family and told them I was going right to the ER, not even stopping home, it would take too long.  After many tests and such, they just said it was an atypical migraine.  She said if I got them like that again, come back in?  No kidding? I thought I'd stay home in pain.  YIKES!!

Audrey, I sure hope you can get some help for your newly diagnosed migraines.  Don't feel discouraged because not all meds work for everyone.  In fact, I can't take the triptans because I had a stroke-like reaction to them.

Good Luck!

Hello thought I would chime in as well. I am 35 and I have had Migraines for the last 10 years. I didn't start having them until I had my son. He is now 10. They say it may have been the epidural. But I don't believe it.  I had ct's, mri's and even the dhe therapy that neurologists do for migraines. The therapy helped but after about 5-6 weeks they come back and even worse. I have vomited so much that the acid ate away my esophagus and I had to have it rebuilt with part of my stomach. YUK. I have even had a hystorectomy. My ob dr gave me a shot of lupron and set me into menopause. My headaches came back about a month later. No help. They think I might have Suedo Tumor Cerebrii. Too much spinal fluid. The only way to find out is to have a spinal tap. So I have been on meds for about 6 months. Guess what they come back. My whole family has had migraines. My greatgrandmother, mother, aunts, me, and now my nieces. I think it is hereditary. So good luck on find out what causes them. If you do I would really like to know what works. I know how you feel I have been sick most of my son's life. I have lost 2 jobs over them. My God Bless you and help you. I have learned to just live with them. I take meds during the week to get me through my job and then either have a shot or stay zonked on pain meds.

Are you scheduled to have a spinal tap to see if you have pseudotumor cerebri? It can triger Migraines. When my doctor did a spinal tap, found that I have it, and treated it, it really reduced the number of Migraines I was having.
