Q: can a nerve block of the trigeminal nerve work in preventing migraines

I've heard the occipital nerve block and botox injections are similar and I wondered if that's true. Or, can you get trigeminal nerve blocks to help alleviate the pain of migraines? I've suffered with migraines for over 50 years and have tried everything, from the east to the west. The intensity seems to be getting better but the daily factor remains. With the severe ones at least 3 times a week. For me they are genetic as my mom and my grandmother had them just as bad as i have now. It seems the preventives don't work very well for me and I can't take triptans because i've had a heart attack and still have heart problems, which leaves out a lot of meds.  Anything you can recommend? I still follow the h/a diet. Thank you.

I need to check this one with Dr. Krusz. Will email him and post his answer to you as soon as I can.

Thanks!

I have suffered from migraines for the past 8 years, and was having 20 or so a month. I tried all of the preventatives with no success. I started the Botox injections this past May and now have had 3 sets of injections. Again, when I started, I was having 20 or so a month, with ER visits every other month and after the second set of injections noticed a decrease in both the severity and frequency of the migraines. So far in December, I have only had 4 migraines, so I am a believer in the Botox and would recommend it to anyone having frequent migraines.
