Q: why did I have no migraines during pregnancy and now they are back?

I had migraines starting after I had my 3rd child. 4 years of pain and then I got pregnant with my  4th child  (a surprise)  I had no migraines the entire pregnancy, now My baby is 6 months old and the migraines are back!  They are not just menstrual migraines, though most are close to menstruation they are also very weather related. Why did pregnancy stop them and cant we simulate pregnancy to stop them again?

mommyof4,

Yours is not an unusual situation. Quite a few women experience fewer or no Migraines during pregnancy. Some are less fortunate and experience more Migraines during pregnancy. This is due the the dramatic changes in multiple hormones during pregnancy.

Hormone therapy is rather a "crap shoot." It helps some women, makes things worse for some, and makes no difference at all for yet other women. The only way to find out is to work with your doctor and give it a try.

Good luck,

Teri

Hi mommyof4,

If there were a way to induce that pregnancy hormone I'd be one of the first to sign up and I have NO kids. LOL!! I don't only get them at my periods either~I get them most of the time. But if I could get rid of the ones right before my period, I think 1/2 would go away!! Being in "peri-menopause" is no fun! But when I get the headache that nothing will help, even a demerol shot, I know that my period will be here in about 5 days. Pregnancy did stop both my sister & sister in law's! My sister never had another migraine, my sister in law does have them again. She says if we could figure out what hormone it is and bottle the stuff, we'd be rich!! LOL (I'm kidding~we'd share, just because they are so awful!!)

I have "change in the weather" migraines also, when it's humid here, let alone rains, forget it!! If it's really hot (I live in the desert~go figure!!) I get one. I try to find anything to blame them on~I hate not knowing why!!

I've had migraines since I was a teenager but not 1 during my pregnancies!   I've asked my doctor about that and he says that there are studies that show some migraines seem to be hormone related, but of course its not that absolute. (wouldn't that be great!!) Mine are also brought on by low pressure systems it seems and as I use the depo provera injections as a means of  birth control and no longer have monthly cycles, I can't be sure if other headaches are "on cycle" or not.  I have at least 8-10 a month though, so it can't all be that!

I have the same situation-no migraines during both my pregancies- I assumed that I did not have a food trigger, however I am looking into it and doing a food diary......I have since then gone to a neurologist.

he put me on Magnesium oxide-Blaine MagOX(400)- 1 pill twice daily for a total of 2....

Vitamin B-2-100mg- 2 pills twice daily for a total fo 4.

According to my neurologist and the research I've done Magnesium and B2 deficiencies can cause migraines...

One multivitamin

headaches went from about 9 a month to 5..

since then went on seasonique to see if I didn't get my period if i would get more headaches.  birth control gives me more headaches,...so I am off.....

I am considering checking out taking a calcium supplement also....

I am researching everything.......

check with your doctor.....

I hope this helps....
