Q: migraine-underactive thyroid..connection??

have recently started to get a reoccurence of migraine attacks with aura which I used to experience in my early 20's...but seemed to have a realativley migraine free period for about 20 years with just the odd attack every 2-3 years!! since being diagnosed last year with underactive thyroid and prescribed thyroxin as treatment...migraines seem to have re-established themselves in my life..just wondering if there is a connection??Cry

Hi joolz,

Clemmie is right, Migraine disease and thyroid conditions can sometimes be comorbid conditions. This means they occur together but are not caused by one. Our article about this may be very helpful:  Migraine, Headache, and Thyroid.

I hope this helps.

Around 1988 I began having aura migraines.  The first one I was driving.  Very scary.  I went to an Optician and was told it was in my head. LOL  He suggested I see a Neurologist.  After being tested I was told I had Petite Mall. Put on Neurontin or Dilantin.  Didn't seem to help! 3 years later I fell and twisted my ankle that doctor put me on Depocote to "scramble the pain message to the brain. Sent me to another Neurologist who told me I didn't have Petite Mall but Aura Migraine.  The episodes lasted until around 2004.  Then stopped until last year when I was hospitalized for hernea surgory.  I had one in the hospital. Then no more until about a year ago when my Physician started me on Thyroid replacement.  I am now on Armour Thyroid.  The episodes are occurring more frequently. One a day.  I am wondering if I should stop taking my Thyroid meds. and see if the Aura's stop.

Joolz--I was unable to read your posting, except the first four lines, but it looks like you are asking if thyroid function and migraines might be related?

The answer is that many of us with migraines do have thyroid issues.  I have a history of hormonal migraines, but they got much worse in the late 1990's, becoming daily headaches.  It took three years to learn that I was hypothyroid (hashimotos thyroiditis, autoimmune), but when I started thyroid replacement therapy, my migraine "pattern" quickly reverted back to 8-12 per month, rather than daily occurences.  You can do a search in this forum and see that there are many folks who have hypothyroidism that also have migraines.  The "ask the expert" forum also covered this topic a long time ago, and can probably be retrieved from the archives.  I hope you are on replacement medication and that is it helping both conditions.
