Wendy,

Sleep studies are sometimes performed when you don't know what's triggering headaches or Migrained, particularly if you're waking with them.

Sleep issues are very common Migraine triggers:

  • too little sleep
  • too much sleep
  • disrupted sleep
  • irregular sleep schedule
  • poor quality sleep

Even if you're sleeping long enough, it may not be good quality sleep. You can get more information in Migraines, Headaches, and Sleep: Video.

Welcome again,

Teri

Hey Wendy,

I think along the way when a doctor is trying to fugure out why someone gets frequent migraines, or frequent tension headaches, a sleep study may be called for.  For example if the person has sleeping problems they could in fact have sleep apnea and not know it and that could cause headaches or migraines.  In my case, I sleep quite poorly due to another heath problem and lack of sleep is a migraine trigger, so I went for a sleep study to determine if there was an underlying sleep disorder.  Certainly a sleep study is not needed, but in some cases it helps.

It needs to be done to rule out the cause of Migraine.  Sleep apnea could be the rease for the headache.  If all you need to resolve a headache is bi pap thats a win win situation.

It was one of the test I had done before I went to the Diamond clinic, because I didnt want to get there and them say....." you have sleep apnea".   So do your home work rule out the simple things, like medication overuse headache, caffiene, headache.
