Q: Aura AFTER a migraine

I just turned 30 on May 4 and am on a maintenance plan with my neurologist for my migraines. I was "officially diagnosed" with migraines about 2 years ago after I got tired of being on allergy medicines and even when as far as having sinus surgery because I was tired of the sinus headaches/migraines that I thought I was having.

Well, the last few migraines that I've had I've noticed that AFTER the migraine, either that afternoon/evening or even a day later I'll see spots in the eye on the side I have my migraine on. This is very bizarre to me because I thought you saw auras BEFORE a migraine attack. I've never had auras before so this is new to me. My maternal grandmother had auras before her attacks so I know this is all genetic but the fact that it's happening afterward has me concerned.

Anyone have this problem or know why my brain is doing this all of a sudden? Is it the beginning of the end, as my mom calls it, where you start to fall apart when you turn 30? Tongue out

 Hi Gretchen,

If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

For purposes of treatment, learning about your Migraines, being able to get care if you're away from home, etc., you need to get an accurate diagnosis of what type of Migraine you have. You can read more about this in The Type of Migraine Does Matter.  Speaking of the different types of Migraine, almost 90% of people who think they have sinus headache actually have Migraines. For more information on this, please take a look at Sinuses Giving You a Headache? It's Probably a Migraine .

Good luck and keep us posted, ok?

Nancy
