Q: I have been diagnosed with occipital nerve damage, here is my story.

I have been diagnosed with occipital nerve damage, I have been receiving steroid injections for 11 years and at first beleived they were workink. As of the last few years i told my doc they were not and he just uped the dosage and times per year. I have tried anti-seizure and they somewhat work but i still injure the nerve very easily, ama very physically active man but in the last year am very kimite at what i can do. It is actually getting very easy to set the episodes off, my doc finally agreed to look into gamma-knife as a fix he first said i would have to just put up with it i disagreed and had to get ornary with him i can not, will not live like this i know disection is an older unpreferred fix but i have been reading on a decompression technique only done by one man in the states, what do you think.

Hi dave,

It sounds like your doctor may not be listening to you. That means one thing - time for a new one! Another thought is if your pain isn't getting better, or hyou are not seeing an improvement in your Migraines, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

One of the most important things is to get an accurate diagnosis. To simplify matters and make it easier for people to get information and treatment, doctors usually go by the gold standard for diagnosis, the International Headache Society's International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd Edition (ICHD-II).  You can read more about the importance of a correct diagnosis in The Type of Migraine Does Matter.

Don't lose hope, there are lots of options out there especially with the help of the right doctor. When you get a minute take a look at this article, Migraine Preventive Medications - Too Many Options To Give Up!

I hope this helps,

Nancy
