Q: My son has been having weekly migraines - something he's never had before.

He's had them since he was 6 and more recently, he would have them maybe monthly or every 2 or 3 months. But in the last few weeks, he's been having them weekly. His main triggers are weather fronts/barometric changes. Anyone else out there been having more frequent headaches than ever before?

Hi cil1971,

Many Migraineurs I know are having a difficult "summer." How old is your son?  You may want to consider having your son see a Migraine specialist before his Migraines get too far out of control.

Last November at the American Headache Society Headache conference, Dr. Paul Winner, a pediatric Migraine specialist said that adolescent episodic Migraine can transform to chronic Migraine fairly quickly. Just something to keep in mind.

If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

I hope this helps,

Nancy

Thank you for your reply!!

My son is 30 and takes the 20 mg Imitrex nasal spray, which is literally a life-saver because his headaches are so severe.

Our problem with seeing more people is we don't have any insurance. His meds are SO expensive - 3 doses are $100.

There are programs to help pay for the cost of prescription medications for those who do not have health insurance. You may want to try Partnership for Prescription Assistance and NeedyMeds.

I hope this helps some.

Nancy gave you good sites to check for patient assistance programs. Something else is to talk with his doctor and see if he could change to the Imitrex tablets or injectons. They're both available in generic form -- sumatriptan.

Imitrex nasal spray actually has gone generic but not enough time has passed for other companies to start competing.

The generic status of the nasal spray is so new that no generics are even listed on the FDA site yet. On the other hand, both the generic tablets and injections have been on the market long enough that they're readily available and less expensive.

The last 2 prescriptions I've gotten were generic but I know it takes awhile for all the benefits to kick in.

My 9 year old started getting his migraines so frequently this year he missed almost a month of school.  the doctor told us that after talking to my son he has been having them for years but thought they were normal (explains alot from when he was young)  Our Neuro put him a natural medication called Petadolex, you buy it online @ www.migraineaid.com  it has worked wonders for my son, its a preventative without all the side affects.  We were told it has been used in germany for 40+ years.  My brother hasmigrains as well and has stared taking it and is no longer on imatrex.  Hope this helps
