Q: So what can I do about hormonal migraines?

I've had migraines for years and they have become increasingly worse with age.  I get three or four ranging in severity before, during and after a menstrual cycle.  I take maxalt to treat them but I am looking for something to reduce or prevent them.  I'll try anything!

Hi Jacinda,

Changing hormones can be very problematic for some women, I know they can be for me. We get a lot of questions on this topic, and have information it in this Ask the Clinician question: Role of hormones in causing (TRIGGERING) Migraines?.

I hope it helps.

I have been taking Depo-Provera for four years to ease my cycle migraines.  It is an injection given every 3 months at your doctor's office.  It is a birth control medicine, but has different hormones than the pill.  One of the common side effects is not having a period anymore.  Give it a try.
