Q: Cafergot Suppositories

I used to use Cafergot Suppositories several years ago but I thought it was taken off the market because of problems- can't remember the reason now.  I have been searching every so often through the years but couldn't find it.  If I can find it my Doctor will prescribe it for me again.  Tonight I found it on a Canadian website and another one that doesn't sell to the general public.  I am a member of My Migraine Connection and have tried to find something on it before and couldn't, tonight I did.  Anyway-- where can I get the Cafergot Suppositories, my local CVS says they still cannot get it.  Also they got my migraine under control fast and kept my head clear so I could keep working.  Help!  Thanks!

Calli,

According to the FDA site, Cafergot tablets have been discontinued, but supposedly the suppositories are still being made. It's possible that the suppositories are discontinued too, but that the database isn't updated on that yet.

There's another suppository with the same ingredients called Migergot. You might check with your pharmacist on that.

Keep us posted?

Hi Teri ~ I'm so sorry for not answering you!  I talked to my Dr about it and he hadn't seen anymore information on getting it.  He is extremely efficent and up on the latest medicines etc for migraines and is always willing to help me.  So I'm giving up on it.  I liked it because it didn't give me the side effects that I have trouble with.  If they ever make it available again I will be sure to get some.

Thank you for your help  :o)     Calli

A FDA approved generic version of Cafergot Suppositories (MIGERGOT) have been on the market, available and manufactured by G & W Laboratories, Inc., located out of South Plainfield, NJ.

You may reference the National Drug Code (NDC# 0713-0166-12)  A physician must write a prescription for Migergot.  Migergot is NOT a over-the-counter product but a prescription Rx drug.  All retail pharmacies have access to buying this product from their designated wholesaler of choice.

Migergot Suppositories are taken at the onset of your Migraine.

Hi Calli,

I just saw your post.  I have been filling my cafergot prescription at my local compounding pharmacy since December 2011 with not problem.  It is expensive but worth not suffering with migraines. Have you tried contacting your local compounding pharmacy.  Not all are willing to work with patients.  Mine has been in business since 1959 and has a stellar reputation.  It may take a few phone calls.  Good luck!
