Q: vise-like pain in leg arm and nec left side of her face slightly numb extreme migraine

Sister experienced vise-like pain in right groin then tingling and numbness in leg for apx 30 hrs off and on. Next the pain started in her left arm and neck, same as leg pain.  The left side of her face was tingly and slightly numb then extreme migraine followed after apx 24 hrs.  EKG, CAT scan and MRI were normal.  Neurologist said all of the symptoms were just the beginnings of a migraine.  Does that sound like a valid diagnosis? She has had gastric bypass in 2005.

Denise,

Migraines can cause many body aches along with tingling and numbness, but what you describe sounds quite extreme, especially the vise-like pain in the groin.

If this happens again, I'd suggest calling her doctor or taking her to the ER immediately so she can be examined while it's happening.

If she's uncomfortable with her doctor's answer, there's never anything wrong with getting a second opinion.

Good luck to you and your sister,

Teri

I suffer from a migraine variant that sounds very similar to the one you are describing that your sister is suffering from. It is a not a common migraine or even what people think of when you explain you are suffering from a migraine condition. My first experience with mine came while I was driving but my pain began with a feeling as if someone had stabbed a knife in my neck. Pain spread down my left arm and my right leg began to go numb, followed by my left side of my face. My left side of my tounge also went numb. Feeling came back somewhat but only as tingling and pins and needle-like. I thought I was either having a stoke or a heart attack. I spent several days in the hospital that yielded nothing. I later went though three doctors. The third actually admitted he had no idea what was wrong and referred me to a neurologist. After months of thinking I was just crazy, my fourth doctor diagnosed me with a migraine variant. Below is a site that explains the different types. I hope this will help you and your sister.

A little side note: If for any reason, you are uncomfortable with the doctor's analysis of your sister's condition. Never be afraid to get another opinion from another doctor. Remember that they call them "Practicing Medicine" for a reason. No one is right 100% of the time. Wink

If I had not gone through my four doctors, I would still be wondering what was wrong with me.

Good Luck and bless both you and your sister.

I have had intense burning pain episodes in my right leg ever since I had an injury and surgery to it back in 2007. After a few episodes (lack of better term) the pain was actually in both my legs. It was like someone had tied something really tight around my thigh and then lit the leg on fire, almost a feeling of suffucation. I actually told my physical therapist that it felt like I had a migraine in my leg. I went to a neurologist today, and after seeing 5 doctors in the past two years, he thinks I have this migraine variant. I had been diagnosed with migraines quite a while ago and hadn't had this variant until the trauma/surgery to my leg. A couple time I actually got the pain in my shoulder and neck and usually the following day would have a severe migraine. I never put the two together, I just figured that the migraine was my bodies way of taking my mind off the leg pain. (lol.) I'm starting a daily preventative medication to see if this eases these episodes as the pain was to the point I couldn't even put weight on my leg. Hopefully this medication will work.
