Q: Zomig and atrial fibrillation

I have chronic migraines. My neurologist says they are cervicogenic in nature and also partly due to allergies and enviromental sensitivities. I take Zomig. I sometimes have chest discomfort after taking Zomig. Is there a safer drug  for me to take since I also have atrial fibrillation?

Pat,

All of the triptans such as Zomig carry a warning about heart issues. It's more about vascular disease of the heart, but you might want to check with the doctor who treats you for the fibrillation to see what he thinks about triptans. In general, some patients who have side effects with the older triptans -- Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, and Amerge -- find fewer issues with the newer triptans -- Relpax, Axert, and Frova.

Another Migraine abortive to consider and discuss with your doctor is Midrin.

Hope this helps,

Teri
