Hi Cortney,

First it is important to get an accurate diagnosis. If your doctor isn’t able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It’s important to note that neurologists aren’t necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

One trick we have, (after the right diagnosis and by no means is this a diagnositic tool), is to place our head between our knees during a "headache."  If our head pain is worse, then it probably is a Migraine, if it stays the same, a headache.

We have a section on our site that lists some of the various types of different Migraines and headaches. You can find that here: Types of Migraines and Headaches. And Tension-Type Headaches HERE.

I hope this helps,

Nancy

Let me know if you still have questions?

This animation shows one of the key causes of pain during a migraine--changes to the blood flow within the brain.
