Depakote feedback

My neuro is a loyal Topamax fan and I've been on (and off, I must confess) of it for about a year.  The side effects are brutal as most of you will attest and though my migraines might have decreased in severety they haven't decreased in number yet.

I mentioned it to my GP the other day and he gave me Depakote to try.  Since I'm not scheduled to go back to the Neuro for another 9 months, he suggested I try the Depakote for 4 months and see if the side effects are better.   I read up on it and frankly these warnings seem just as bad if not worse -- weight gain???? I'd rather lose than gain!  Hair loss????

Just wanted to hear if anyone else has tried going the Depakote route over Topamax and what your "real life" experience has been.

I have been working my way through the list of medicines that can prevent migraines - my doctor keeps trying to push topamax on me even though I did try it for a time about two years ago and couldn't tolerate it (I agree with you about the side effects - AWFUL). In any event, I am trying a drug called BuSpar, which is an anti-anxiety med. My doctor wanted me to work my way up to 45 mgs/day but I couldn't tolerate it (upset stomach). However, we discovered that I could tolerate a lower dose and that this did indeed work. Now I am taking 15 mgs/day with no side effects and it has brought me from 4-5 migraines/week down to about 4-5 /month. It isn't perfect but it has worked so much better for me than anything other preventative has thus far.
