Q: I have had silent migraine auras since I was 20. I am now 55. They are happening more frequently.

I have had silent migraine auras since I was 20.  I am now 55.  At first they were monthly then stretched to 3-5 months.  In January 2009 they started coming every 5 days for like 4 weeks.  Then I went to see my doctor.  He put me on Xanax.  It worked for a month, then I got another then 5 days later another.  I did not take the Xanax twice a day, only once.  I always felt so tired with two a day.  Would taking two a day be a solution?  I get them in the middle of the night in bed sleeping.

Hi Joanne,

No, taking two Xanax a day would not be a good solution for Migraine, silent or otherwise. In fact, Xanax is a medication used for anxiety and is for short term use only. And it is not used for Migraine prevention.

Silent or acephalgic Migraine is any Migraine attack without the headache, or second phase. Acephalgic Migraines are treated like any other Migraines, with abortives and/or preventives if needed. Here is our information on: Acephalgic or Silent Migraine - The Basics.

Are you still getting them? A Migraine specialist may be the way to go now. This doctor, an expert, treats patients with Migraines and headache disorders, devoting his entire practice to this area. Neurologists treat so many different conditions like MS, stroke and epilepsy, it is difficult for them to be experts in any one area. We have a list of patient recommended specialists you can see HERE.

Good luck

Nancy

Wow you sound like me.  I also began having them at 20 and am now 58.  In the last 6 months they are happening 6-8 a month.  I also can get them during sleep or right when I wake.  I am not taking anything because there are so many side effects to all the meds.  I don't have pain after or maybe a slight dull headache that tylenol would fix.  I am so worried about the effects of these.  I have a neurologists who specializes in headaches at the University of Cincinnati and he isn't overly concerned.  I have done mri, cat scans, acupuncture, cranial sacral, chiropractor, watched my diet, yoga, If I wasn't anxious before this has increased, I am now.  I just had one and took a xanax that I only take every now and then.  The doc did suggest Cymbalta because it has shown to reduce auras in some people and help the depression and anxiety also.  BUT it has side effects and is hard to get of of.
