Q: Is it the topamax or is it the migraines that make me feel as if I am losing my memory

Ever Since I started taking topamax, which was ten years ago when I started with migraines, I have had trouble with word finding and feel as if I can not remember anything.  I have even been driving and them arrived at my destination with out knowing how I got there, or I have gotten lost in my own neighborhood.  Why is it that I feel like I am losing my mind??

It could be either one, but it's probably more likely to be the Topamax. Topamax side effects tend to be dosage dependent, meaning that the more of it you take, the worse the side effects can be.

Please discuss this with your doctor. It's really not safe for you to drive, among other things, when your memory is like this.

Hey,

I don't know for sure but I do remember having a lot of trouble finding words when I was on topamax. This stopped a few months after I quit taking it.

I am currently taking 100 mg of topamax in the morning and 100 mg of topamax in the evening.  I think that depending on how your body reacts to the drug is how your memory will be effected.  My aunt and my mom had a hard time with it, I on the other had only have a hard time with finding the right word.  I do have a moment where I forget what I am doing but I realize what it is and it hasn't been a problem yet.  So far this drug has been the best for me.  I have been on 15 different drugs for my migraines and I am willing to work with the side effects to not have to deal with the horrible pain of the migraines.  I went from having them almost daily to having a great big one (10 days long once a month) (yeah I still am getting that checked out too).  Maybe topamax just isn't for you.  There are other options out there to.
