Q: Genric Depakote and low levels

Reg Depakote is now gerneric as of 3 wks ago and my sons migraines have been every day since.  When he had his blood drawn to check his levels it was as  if he was not taken the Depakote at all.

He does take his depakote with 3 other pills all at once in the morning and 4 other pills at night so i know he is taking them.  I usually pop them in his mouth so he does not drop them. So yes he is taking them, I know some are thinking that question.

He has been on Depakote for over 2 yrs now. Any feedback on this would be helpful.

Yikes! With the generic being so new, this is the first feedback I've had about it. Sorry I can't offer you more in the way of what others have had to say.

Have you talked to your pharmacist and your son's doctor yet? I'd make those phone calls right away. If it was his doctor who told you about his blood levels, what did the doctor say? When you talk with the pharmacist, please find out what company made the generic you bought. there are several of them. If you, your son's doctor, and the pharmacist feel there's something wrong with the medication, it should be reported to the FDA's MedWatch Program HERE.

I'll watch here to see if anyone offers you their experiences. Would you please come back and let us know what happens?

Good luck to you and your son,

Teri

I was taken off regular Depakote due to a very low sodium level.  My doctor tied it to the Depakote.  This may not be a regular sympton, but perhaps something you should check.

Hi, I've been on Depakote for 3 yrs for migraine control.  I read here that Depakote was now generic just in time for a refill.  I was happy because it cost $30 less.  I was busy and my headaches were worse for 19 days and didn't realize that was the problem until I started checking.  I got my regular refilled and it took 4 days to get back to where I should be.  Maybe your son is having the same problem I had.
