Q: Dull headache on top of nose and above eyes

I have had this dull old headache on top of my nose and above my eyes for the last 6 months I'ts not very painful but I'ts there all the time, although it has eased in the last month. I also have a stiff and painful neck at the back and base of my skull I have been to a chiropractor twice in the last month, and I have been to my GP 6 times, The thing that worries me is I have never been diagnosed with anything, I also suffer from tinnitus for many years. I have recently been to see an optician for an eye test , which was normal I also attended an appointment to see a ENT Specialist after Xmas, and my sinuses were OK, I sometimes suffer with slight dizziness but my balance is OK can you advise please?

Hi kendal,

I'd love to be able to help you, but in order to have an accurate diagnosis, you need to see your doctor. He/she will review your and your family's medical history, discuss your symptoms with you, and conduct a complete examination. Nobody can diagnose via the Internet. Besides, it just isn't safe.

But it sounds like you've seen quite a few doctors and aren't getting anywhere. It may be time to find an expert in headache medicine - not a neurologist who says they are a headache specialist - but a doctor who is board certified in headache medicine. And here's why: neurologists may be fine doctors, but have a hard time being experts in one area. This is because they treat so many conditions like MS, epilepsy and stroke. A Migraine specialist is just that, an expert who treats one condition - ours - Migraines and headache disorders. When you get a chance, take a look at article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists. Does that make sense?

You mentioned your neck has been bothering you. Neck pain can be a symptom of a Migraine attack that is frequently overlooked. Continue reading Neck Pain as a Migraine Symptom  and Migraine Treatment Delayed by Neck Pain

Sinus headaches are rare unless you have a sinus infection. At least 90% of what people think are sinus headaches are actually Migraines. Continue reading Migraines Sinus Giving You a Headache? It's Probably Migraine for more information

Do you take anything for your daily head pain? Taking Migraine abortive meds such as the triptans or ergotamines or any kind of pain medication -- prescription or over-the-counter -- more than two or three days a week can make matters worse by causing medication overuse headache (MOH), aka rebound. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this.

In addition to taking care of that head pain, (more on that below) you also really need an accurate diagnosis. One of the most important things is to get an accurate diagnosis. To simplify matters and make it easier for people to get information and treatment, doctors usually go by the gold standard for diagnosis, the International Headache Society's International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd Edition (ICHD-II).  You can read more about this in The Type of Migraine Does Matter.

When Migraines don't respond to treatment, they're termed intractable. In such cases, there are several medications that can be administered through IV infusion to get the cycle broken. You can find more information in IV Treatment of Refractory Migraine.

I hope this information is helpful,

Nancy
