Q: Preventative & Rescue Pain Medication

Had migraines for almost 30 years.  Where can I find a doctor that will prescribe preventative AND rescue pain medication? I'm having difficulty finding one in my area (Branson / Springfield, Missouri).  Many will not treat me at all.  Most will only give the preventive medication.  And "Headache / Pain Management Clinics" require expensive tests and consultations (already had many in the past) and I have no insurance.  I've ended up in the ER too many times for extreme pain because I cannot find a doctor in this area (relatively new to the area) that will give a pain med prescription in addition to the Maxalt MLT I take to stop the migraines.  When I wake up with them in the middle of the night, Maxalt and other preventative meds won't work.  It's isn't very frequent, but when it does happen, I need something to stop the pain without having to pay hundres of dollars at the ER.

Let's talk a bit about medications. Maxalt isn't a preventive medication. It's a Migraine abortive medication. Abortive medications work in the brain to stop the Migrainous process, thus stopping the pain and other symptoms.

The ideal regimen has three types of medications:

1) Preventives to reduce the frequency and severity of your Migraines.

2) Abortives to stop the Migraines you do get.

3) Rescue medications to use on the infrequent occasions when the abortives fail.

You can read more about this in Preventive, Abortive, and Rescue Medications - What's the Difference?

I have no way of knowing which doctors in your area prescribe what type of medications. Sorry. What I do know about your area is that Dr. Roger Cady is in Springfield, and he is excellent. If you want to contact him, you can find his contact info in our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Please keep us posted?

Good luck,
