FrownHi my name is sherry @ i would like to tell you my experance with these bad migraines. I have had bad headaches all my life, since I was little, and as I got older the worse they become. I was a home health nurse and went to many homes, and seem like everyday I would have a bad headache. But I did not miss work. In 1992 I had one of those migraines and went to pick up my check

at the hospital on the 4th floor , and fell over dead,,,,,,,,,,. They thought I had had a heart attact dur to all the hours that I worked. They brought me back and the first thing that I told them Is that the back of my head Is killing me. Come to find out I had had a Brain anysurym, a weak blood vessel in the brain. I died three times. I not e-mailing this to scare you but I would have them check a little closer than what they are. I still have migraines, but I found out that if i

take two Excerdrain for migrains, lay down with an ice pack In about thirty minutes my migraine is gone. It is the best I have found to take.

Buck,

I'm sorry to read about your daughter's situation. You didn't say what treatments have been tried to break this Migraine.

A round of steroids, starting with several tablets per day and decreasing by one tablet until gone is often tried in this kind of situation.

When that doesn't work, IV infusion is generally the next step. There are several different medications that can be used this way. For more information, see IV Treatment of Intractable Migraine.

If your daughter's doctor isn't able to help, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

They have done the standard neurological tests, save for an EEG.  I would have them run the autoimmune series, especially the anticardiolipid tests, due to her chronic head pain, and the lupus anticoagulant test, and dependent upon those results - if they come up positive, I'd go to a rheumatologist, negative, to a headache specialist.  If they came out positive, I'd want an EKG too.

This animation shows one of the key causes of pain during a migraine--changes to the blood flow within the brain.
