They seem to get much worse every month. I usually get one the day before I start and one about 3 days into the cycle. I have heart issues so I have to be careful what kind of med's I take. Right now I take bulbitabal and will top it off with Anacin which has asprin and caffeine. It usually helps but I am wondering if there is an estrogen patch or something that I can wear a few days before I start and 3 days into the cycle? I will ask my neurologist about this but my gosh it takes 4 months to get an appointment in with him. Also, my migraines format in the back of the skull with horrific throbbing. The older I get the worse the pain gets. I also get the left face sided migraines, and tension headaches. I think prevention therapy is a great idea but for me there is so much I can't take because of my heart arrhythmia which really makes medicating difficult.

Thanks,

Teresa

I get hormonal migraines as well and I personally think that estrogen could make it worse.......(I'm not a doctor) but I've had migraines all my life and I've read about Progesterone balancing estrogen and that is what I use.  You get the cream from health stores or online......just rub into your skin.  It is frustrating since I get them quite often.  Something to think about...

Note from moderator: This type of cream, or any other remedy, should be discussed with your doctor BEFORE trying it.

I have all different kinds of migraines but hormonal ones around my cycle are some of the worst. I started taking seasonel to help with that. Having 4 periods a year means only 4 times a year of dealing with them as opposed to 12. It's not the perfect solution but it's better than nothing.

Teresa,

Estrogen suppmentation such as the patch you mention can make things better, make things worse, or make no difference at all. The only way to find out is to try. Sadly, that's the case with many things about Migraines.

On the subject of preventives, I understand that heart arrhythmia complicates things, but many of the medications that are being used effectively for Migraine prevention were originally developed to treat heart issues. You can find a listing of preventive medications, listed by class in our article Migraine preventive medications - too many options to give up!

With the complications in your situation, you might find it best to consult a Migraine specialist and for him or her to consult with your other doctors. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Good luck,

Teri
