Q: I am a 16 year migraine suffer who passed out yesterday - Related?

My migraines are triggered by my menstrual cycle and are controlled with Maxalt.  Yesterday, for the first time, I became very dizzy and disoriented while on my lunch break.  I passed out in the lobby of my building and was taken to the ER.  After a blood work up and a CT scan, I was released since they could not determine was caused me to pass out. Could the migraines and this latest episode be related?  I had just finished a migraine attack (I get them for 4 -5 days every month triggered by menstrual cycle).

Hi jeanne,

Unfortunately, depending on the symptoms, only a doctor can tell if the two are related. That's why it's important to contact your doctor when you have symptoms that are different, severe, or frightening.

I can tell you that more than three Migraines a month is too many and a better prevention plan should be discussed with your doctor. There's growing evidence that Migraine is a progressive brain disease. A recent study showed that Migraines can cause brain damage, and that people with three or more Migraines a month are more susceptible to this damage. For more information, see Is Migraine a Progressive Brain Disease? and Yes, Migraines Can Cause Brain Damage.

There are now so many medications that can be used for Migraine and headache prevention that it's literally impossible to have tried them all, so don't lose hope. You can find a list of potential Migraine and headache preventives in Migraine preventive medications - too many options to give up!

Does that help?

Nancy

Jeanne,

This incident could have been Migraine related, but it could also have been related to any number of other things. The ER staff probably told you to follow up with your family doctor. Please do so. He or she knows you and your medical history and is far better qualified to answer this than anyone else.

Please keep us posted?
