Q: Use of Butterbur for Migraines

Has anyone ever tried the herb butterbur for their migraines?  This was suggested to me by my healthcoach from my Health Insurance.

Hi marienqueen,

We've seen butterbur to be very effective for some people. I wanted to remind everyone though that it's important to talk to your doctor before taking any supplements, whether you take other meds or not. Supplements have much less stringent regulations, and I've see supplements on sites that give you not information about potential side effects.

Butterbur is difficult and expensive to process correctly. The Petadolex brand has been thoroughly tested, and is known to be safe. Some companies do combinations of butterbur and other ingredients, and some of those buy their butterbur from the manufacturer of Petadolex.

Herbals and other dietary supplents are to be considered medications. Their ingredients were mankind's first medications, and they do act as drugs in our systems. Being sure of the quality has been a problem. There have been tests done on some that showed them to have less of key ingredients than the labels state, some have more. The FDA has just issued a rule to address that. Take a look at Migraines, Dietary Supplements, and a Final FDA Rule.

I hope this information helps

Nancy

Thanks Nancy.  I will ask my new neurologist about butterbur next month when I see her.  The healthcoach did suggest Petadolex. By the way, I was very moved when I read your post about your attaining  disability status.  I can relate completely as I had to retire 4 months early from my job and use sick leave because of my chronic migraines, head pain and facial neuralgia. I was lucky because I was only those 4 months away from retirement and had enough sick leave saved to see me through to my retirement date until I was 55. I had no intention of retiring but I had no choice.
