Q: Extremely intense migraines

I have recently been getting more and more migraines. I am up to 17 this month, and they have just been getting more intense. For the last few years I have been getting what I all "traveling" migraines where the pain just swirls, but so far this year I have had 2 in 2 months where I normally one have 3 a year, does anyone else have these?? If so what do you do? I am seeing the doctor on Monday, and having a CT scan.

Hi, Alyxandria,

Sorry your Migraines are increasing. That stinks. I can't say that I've experienced the type of Migraine you're describing, but unusual Migraines can be quite disturbing. You're absolutely doing the right thing in seeing your doctor. It's always best to be sure that nothing else is going on and keep working on effective treatment.

Have you and your doctor had any success in reducing the number of Migraines you're having? How long have you been having so many? I've been there, and it's horribly debilitating. I don't know anything about your doctor, but if you've been working with him or her for very long with no success, you might want to consider a true Migraine specialist if your current doctor isn't one. It’s important to note that neurologists aren’t necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Please let me know how your appointment goes and if there's anything else I can do for you?

Good luck on Monday,

Teri

Hi Alyxandria,

I know exactly how you feel. A few years ago I went through the same thing. I see that you already had the scan done, so I hope everythig turns out ok for you Smile! I personally had 2 CT and 1 MRI and they all came out normal. Unfortunatatly I was not able to take a lot of migraine medicanes because of the medications I am on due to my bi-polar so I was limited there. I did go to a nuerologist eventually and she recemmended another medication by the name of topmax, I thought - oh not another medication! It works wonders! (Also I was able to eliminate 2 of my medication for my Bi-polar becuase this is also used to treat people with bi-polar, so double +) My migraines went from 2-3 a day down to 1 a month, and then eventually (pretty quickly) about 1 every 6 months and they are not as bad they used to be. I have been on the medication now for 31/2 years (but I am also taking it as part of my bi-polar meds too) and my migraines are completley under control. Also massage therapy has been wonderful in helping too! Especially if they know accupressure!

I am not sure if this would work for you, or if you would want to go the medication route. But this has worked for me so I thought I would share. I do hope that everything has come out OK with your scans. And just know you are not alone in suffering through this, I know how you are feeling. Hang in there!
