Is it normal to vomit repeatly ( 8X or more) during a migraine ?
It can be. I've vomited so many times that my stomach and back muscles have begun to quiver from fatigue, not to mentiion many trips to the ER due to dehydratiion after long spells of throwing up. If you are having trouble with nausea then see if your doctor will give you something for it to take during the onset of a migraine...if you can keep it down it can help. At that point it becomes a race between the medicine kicking in and and your nausea passing the point of no return, because once you start throwing up, you aren't stopping - nausea causes vomiting, vomiting causes dehydration, and ironically dehydration will cause you to vomit even more. Not fun. I feel ya.

Sometimes if I let my migraines get too far gone I end up gagging repeatedly but not always. That, of course, tends to make my head hurt even worse. I try to not let it get to that stage, however it gets to the point where the ER/Urgent Care centers in my area are to the point where they know me by name and I am made to feel as if I am there just for pain medication even though my doctors have made it clear to me that that is what I need to do BEFORE I get to the "gagging" state. All of the preventative meds and pain meds I've tried don't always help :(

There was a point in my life - between the ages of 15 and 25 - I would vomit repeatedly with every hormonal Migraine. Even if I had nothing left in my system, I was so sensitive to smells, light and movement (even tossing and turning in bed was enough to cause motion sickness) that I would vomit repeatedly. It is absolutely awful and it's one symptom that thankfully just went away on its own. I have no idea if it's normal for everyone, but it was for my mother and myself.

Hello All, When I have a Migraine I also want to Vomit. Maybe not 8 times but several.
I had surgery on my stomach more than a few years back due to acid reflex. I was told to have this operation or pay the piper in the near future by having an artificial implanted esophagus. The surgery went great, no more acid reflex. They used part of my stomach to make a one way valve. The bad part of the surgery is the urge to vomit is still there. Food can go down but, nothing can come up. It is very painful.
When I get a Migraine the urge to vomit is still there. Because I cannot vomit it only adds to the Migraine.

Chuck,
I had to have the GERD repair surgery too. Is the doctor who treats you for your Migraines aware of the surgery and not being able to vomit? If not, please talk to him about it. My doctors make sure I always have meds for nausea so I don't have to go through all the heaving.

Linda,
Do you mean that doctors cannot find her TRIGGERS? Has she tried keeping a Migraine diary? Does she know what things can be triggers? There's a long list of potential triggers -- weather changes, sleep issues, bright or flickering lights, perfumes or funes from chemicals such as cleaning supplies, stuffy rooms, getting overheated, certain foods, dehydration, skipping meals, crying, hormonal fluctuations, flying, loud noises, and more. One of the best ways to spot triggers is to keep a Migraine diary. You can find a diary workbook with our article Your Migraine and Headache Diary.
If you meant CAUSE as in why triggers bring on Migraines, etc., Migraine is a genetic neurological disease caused by genetics and overactive neurons in the brain. In general, imaging studies and other tests show no "cause."
Hope this is helpful,
Teri

WOW!!, that is way to many times to be vomiting. If you vomit that much every time you have a migraine, I would be going to the doctor. If you vomit to much, you will become dehydrated easier and you will have to go to the hospital and get an IV in you to replinish your fluids. So please go to the doctor if you are vomiting that much. When I have my migraines, I usually only vomit maybe 2x but than I take a medicine called Promethazine or Vistral tablets, maybe one of those will help you. Good luck. Brenda

I have suffered with migraines since I have been 14 years old. They have come and gone... but never for long. In the last 25 years... I have had head pain several times a week, sometimes every day for two or three days. Light bothers me. Sound bothers me. Smells often bother me. My office lights are dim. The music is soft. I watch my diet; no aspartame, no MSG, no soda, minimal white sugar and white flour, no "crap".
I eat basically no meat (except chicken); eat lots of fruit and uncooked vegetables, Lots of salad. Minimal caffeine (Starbucks tea - one every few days); otherwise, d-caf tea. No coffee. Never smoked. Never drank. It is what it is. If not for Imitrix, I might have put my aching head through the wall once or twice! But, even with the medication.... once in awhile... a few times a year... a headache makes me vomit; makes me nauseous; makes me weak. I need to go home and go right to bed. I'm 55 years old, and it still happens. I've been in menopause for 9 years - and had to give up ALL dairy 10 years ago (stomach problems); it helped a little... but they are not going away...I drink soy to keep up my calcium intake. It's not easy. The pain is real.
