Q: status migrainous was refused treatment at Kaiser by provider

after fighting a migraine for a week without relief, non of my regular meds were helping, so I called my Kaiser Provider and was told by him that he would not be able to help me.  After I attacked him with my pain, he stated he would consult the Neurologist, he returned his call and his statement that there was nothing they would be able to do for me and that he was going to refer me to the Pain Clinic.  I have had attacks now for nearly thirty years, and have never been denied treatment for a status migrainous.  What to do?

Hi Mishi Di,

I'm not sure why Kaiser would deny a treatment for this, maybe he is not set up in his office to treat Status with IV infusions which he thinks you may need. Just a guess here. That's what I get when I have Status. You need to break the cycle now and if that means the ER or Urgent care clinic please go there. Or if a pain clinic can take you tomorrow please see that they do.

See, here's the thing - a single Migraine that lasts 72 hours or longer with less than a solid four-hour pain-free period, while awake, is termed status Migrainous. You should see your doctor or go to the emergency room if a Migraine lasts that long. See Status Migrainous - The Basics for more information.

Sometimes, the best treatment for intractable Migraines that aren't responding to medications is IV infusion therapy to get the cycle broken. For more information, see IV Treatment of Refractory Migraine.

Let us know how you are,  ok?
