Precautions and Side Effects

Infrequently, a very serious, possibly fatal decrease in blood supply to the hands/feet (peripheral ischemia) or rarely the brain (stroke) can occur if this medication is used with certain drugs. These drugs affect liver enzymes that remove dihydroergotamine from the body (CYP 3A4 enzyme inhibitors). Do not use this medication with azole antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole), macrolide antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin, troleandomycin), or protease inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, nelfinavir, indinavir). Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Irritation of the nose/throat, stuffy nose, bloody nose, changes in taste, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but very serious side effects occur:

  • fast/slow/irregular heartbeat
  • severe headache
  • muscle pain
  • numbness
  • feeling of coldness in the hands/feet
  • blue fingers/toes
  • stomach/abdominal pain
  • rectal bleeding
  • black stools


Seek immediate medical attention if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur:

  • chest/jaw/left arm pain
  • weakness on one side of the body
  • slurred speech
  • vision changes
  • confusion


A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including:

  • rash
  • itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
  • severe dizziness
  • trouble breathing
