Migraine Drug Information

Once you’ve been diagnosed with Migraines, your doctor may prescribe a specific drug regimen. Below you’ll find a list of common drugs prescribed for migraines with links to information about how to take them, interactions with other meds and common side effects.

  • Midrin
    This combination medication is used to relieve tension and Migraine headaches. Acetaminophen helps to decrease the pain from the headache. Isometheptene helps to narrow the widened blood vessels in the head. Dichloralphenazone helps to relax the body.
  • Maxalt (rizatriptan)
    Rizatriptan is used to treat migraines. It helps to relieve headaches, pain and other symptoms of Migraines, including sensitivity to light/sound, nausea, and vomiting. Rizatriptan does not prevent future migraines or reduce how often you may get a headache.
  • Topamax (topiramate)
    Topiramate is used to prevent migraine headaches and reduce how often you may get them. Topiramate will not work to treat a migraine headache once it occurs.

  • Acular Opht
    This medication is used to temporarily relieve itching eyes caused by seasonal allergies. It is also used to prevent and treat eye swelling due to a certain type of eye surgery (cataract removal). Ketorolac belongs to a class of drugs known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by blocking certain natural substances in your body to reduce pain and swelling.

    This medication is used to treat migraines. It helps to relieve headaches, pain and other symptoms of migraines, including sensitivity to light/sound, nausea, and vomiting. Prompt treatment allows you to get back to your normal routine and may decrease your need for other pain medications. Naratriptan does not prevent future migraines or reduce how often you may get a headache.
  • Anaprox Oral
    Naproxen is used to relieve pain and swelling (inflammation) from various conditions. It is used to treat headaches, muscle aches, backaches, tendonitis, dental pain, and menstrual cramps. It also reduces pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis, bursitis, and gout attacks. Reducing these symptoms helps you do more of your normal daily activities. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
  • Axert Oral
    Almotriptan is used to treat migraines. It helps to relieve headaches, pain and other symptoms of migraines, including sensitivity to light/sound, nausea, and vomiting. Prompt treatment allows you to get back to your normal routine and may decrease your need for other pain medications. Almotriptan does not prevent future migraines or reduce how often you may get a headache.
  • Cafergot Oral
    This combination medication is used to treat or prevent a certain type of headache (vascular headaches such as migraine headaches and cluster headaches). Ergotamine helps narrow widened blood vessels in the head, which reduces the throbbing effects of vascular headaches. Caffeine increases the effects of ergotamine by increasing the absorption of ergotamine and also by narrowing the widened blood vessels in the head.
  • Compazine Oral
    This medication is used to treat severe nausea and vomiting from various causes (e.g., anti-cancer treatment, migraine headaches, after surgery).
  • Depakote Oral
    This medication is used to treat seizure disorders, certain psychiatric conditions (manic phase of bipolar disorder), and to prevent migraine headaches. It works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain.
  • Ergomar SL
    This combination medication is used to treat or prevent a certain type of headache (vascular headaches such as migraine headaches and cluster headaches). Ergotamine helps narrow widened blood vessels in the head, which reduces the throbbing effects of vascular headaches.
  • Frova Oral
    Frovatriptan is used to treat migraines. It helps to relieve headaches, pain and other symptoms of migraines, including sensitivity to light/sound, nausea, and vomiting. Prompt treatment allows you to get back to your normal routine and may decrease your need for other pain medications. Frovatriptan does not prevent future migraines or reduce how often you may get a headache.
  • Fioricet Oral
    This combination medication is used to treat tension headaches. Acetaminophen helps to decrease the pain from the headache. Caffeine helps increase the effects of acetaminophen. Butalbital is a sedative that helps to decrease anxiety and cause sleepiness and relaxation.
  • Fiorinal Oral
    This combination medication is used to treat tension headaches. Aspirin helps to decrease the pain from the headache. Caffeine helps increase the effects of aspirin. Butalbital is a sedative that helps to decrease anxiety and cause sleepiness and relaxation.
  • Imitrex Inj
    Sumatriptan is used to treat migraines and cluster headaches. It helps to relieve pain and other symptoms of migraines/headaches including sensitivity to light or sound, nausea, and vomiting. Prompt treatment allows you to get back to your normal routine and may decrease your need for other pain medications. It does not prevent future migraines/headaches or reduce how often you may get a headache.
  • Imitrex Oral
    Sumatriptan is used to treat migraines. It helps to relieve headaches, pain and other symptoms of migraines, including sensitivity to light/sound, nausea, and vomiting. Prompt treatment allows you to get back to your normal routine and may decrease your need for other pain medications. Sumatriptan does not prevent future migraines or reduce how often you may get a headache.
  • Maxalt Oral
    Rizatriptan is used to treat migraines. It helps to relieve headaches, pain and other symptoms of migraines, including sensitivity to light/sound, nausea, and vomiting. Rizatriptan does not prevent future migraines or reduce how often you may get a headache.

  • Phrenilin w/Caffeine-Codeine Oral
    This combination medication is used to treat tension headaches. Codeine is a narcotic pain reliever (opiate-type) that acts on certain centers in the brain to give you pain relief. Acetaminophen helps to decrease the pain from the headache. Caffeine helps increase the effects of acetaminophen. Butalbital is a sedative which helps to decrease anxiety and cause sleepiness and relaxation.
  • Orudis Oral
    Ketoprofen is used to reduce pain, swelling, and joint stiffness from arthritis. It is also used to relieve mild to moderate pain such as menstrual cramps, headaches, muscle aches, backaches, and dental pain. In addition, ketoprofen is used to reduce fever and to relieve minor aches and pains due to the common cold or flu. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
  • RELPAX Oral
    Eletriptan is used to treat migraines when they occur. It helps to relieve headaches, pain, and other symptoms of migraines, including nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light/sound. Prompt treatment allows you to get back to your normal routine and may decrease your need for other pain medications. Eletriptan does not prevent future migraines or reduce how often you may get a migraine.
  • Stadol NS Nasl
    This medication is used to treat moderate to severe pain, including pain from surgery, muscle pain, and migraine headaches. Butorphanol is a narcotic pain reliever similar to morphine. It acts on certain centers in the brain to give you pain relief.
  • TOPAMAX Oral
    Topiramate is used alone or with other medications to prevent and control seizures (epilepsy). This medication is also used to prevent migraine headaches and reduce how often you may get them. Topiramate will not work to treat a migraine headache once it occurs. If you get a migraine headache, treat it as directed by your doctor (e.g., take pain medications, decrease sound and light).
  • Toradol Oral
    Ketorolac is used for the short-term treatment of moderate to severe pain in adults, usually after surgery. Reducing pain helps you recover more comfortably from surgery and return to your normal daily activity sooner. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
  • Zomig Oral
    Zolmitriptan is used to treat migraines. It helps to relieve headaches, pain, and other symptoms of migraines, including nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light/sound. Prompt treatment allows you to get back to your normal routine and may decrease your need for other pain medications. Zolmitriptan does not prevent future migraines or reduce how often you may get a migraine.
