In the simplest of terms, paroxysmal hemicrania (PH) is a rare form of headache that usually begins in adulthood.


Characteristics of the pain of PH

  • severe throbbing
  • claw-like, or boring
  • usually on one side of the face; in, around, or behind the eye
  • occasionally reaching to the back of the neck

The pain of PH may be accompanied by:

  • red and tearing eyes (lacrimation)
  • a drooping or wollen eyelid on the affected side of the face
  • nasal ongestion
  • dull pain, soreness, or tenderness between attacks
