A new migraine medicine called telcagepant was found safe and effective at treating migraines in a new comparative study with the migraine drug Zomig, and it did so without causing some of the common side effects of current triptan migraine drugs. In a study conducted by drugmaker Merck, researchers found that telcagepant and Zomig were similar in their effectiveness, both of which outperformed a placebo. But telcagepant works differently than triptans such as Zomig, which makes it less likely to cause side effects associated with these drugs. Researchers also say telcagepant may be safer for patients who suffer from both migraines and cardiovascular disease.
