Hormones boost FHM frequency in women: study

Scientists have long known that an inherited, severe form of migraine with aura known as familial hemiplegic migraine (FHM) affected more women than men. Now, researchers working with mice may have discovered why. In a recent study, investigators gave the mice one of two genetic mutations that are linked to FHM. They found that female mice were more susceptible to FHM than male mice, a finding that led them to conclude that both genes and hormones lead to a higher frequency of these severe headaches.
