Heart surgery may treat migraines

A small hole in the heart that closes for most people after birth may be behind migraines with aura, some experts say. Up to a quarter of all adults have patent foramen ovale (PFO), say some researchers, and most of them will never have a problem with the condition. In 2000, a study found that patients who had the hole closed for other reasons--say, a stroke--went on to report that they no longer suffered from migraine with aura. And now researchers in England are conducting a trial to see if the 30-minute surgical procedure could be a treatment option for patients who do not find relief with medication.
