According to a new study from Norway, smokers use more prescription painkillers than people who do not smoke. Scientists found that people who smoked at least 10 cigarettes a day at the start of the study were three times as likely as people who'd never smoked to have been prescribed opiates at least 12 times during follow-up. The researchers say this finding suggests that doctors should ask about patients' smoking habits before prescribing them narcotic painkillers for pain that is not related to cancer.
