Do Concussions Play a Role in Lou Gehrig's Disease?

A small new study suggests that the concussions that legendary baseball player Lou Gehrig suffered may have triggered his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS--which later came to be known simply as Lou Gehrig's disease--is a rare and incurable neurological disease that begins with muscle weakness and tremors, and ends with paralysis and death. Researchers at Boston University found that repeated head trauma was linked to an abnormal protein in the brain and spinal cord. The study suggests the TDP-43 abnormal protein may be linked to the development of ALS, though they can't be sure there is a direct causal relationship.
