Does MS Impact Travel Plans? Question of the Week

By Dan and Jennifer Digmann, Health Guide Tuesday, April 03, 2012
Jennifer and I have been together for nearly a decade, but she has yet to set foot into my parents’ home.   We’ve gone back to my hometown of Monticello, Iowa, to spend Easter with my family each year, but the three steep steps leading into their home make it impossible for Jennifer ...

I try to drive everywhere and not take a plane! I live in MI and my parents are in the Philly area of PA. When you break it down it takes just as long to drive there as it does to fly! By the time you take the Lansing Flyer to Detroit, get there 2 hours ahead of time, get to Philly airport, collect luggage (I can't take a 'big" carryon as I use a crutch.

Driving allows me to stop when I need too, which is often to use the restroom and stretch my legs. I can leave Lansing whenever I am ready and if it is late and I know I will not make it the 10 hours I can always stop in Youngstown Ohio (hotel)! I don't have to check baggage as I have to when I fly. And there is no getting around an airport- trying to get a wheelchair. It is just a lot less hassel for me to drive. It comes down to stress for me- driving is less stressful for me!

When I do have to fly somewhere- I get an seat closer to the bathroom and on the isle! I prearrange to get wheelchair service and try to travel with a friend!

If I ever get to a point that I can't get around on my own a car/van with hand controls are what I will get! Not being married I have to depend on myself for most things and not driving sucks as I spent 2 weeks a while ago not driving due to a flare and I've never been more depressed!

Hi.  I to am stuck in a chair.  I now live in Texas with my wife. My 3 children are all mrried and live away from texas.  My mother lives in New Castle DE,  and my in-laws live north of Philadelphia.  Both houses have steps to get into them.  My mother went to hardware store and purchased a aet of ramps that where made to allo you to drive a lawnmower onto a pickup truck.  They came as 2 ramps that fold and slide into a small size case/bag (about 18"w  4' High  8" in high)  It takes anout 10 mins to aet  up nd you drive right in.  I felt like you before this.  Also we just  got back from there (flew  in for a wedding).  Before we went my wife got on cray's list aqnd found  a moterized wheel chair that you remove the batteries and it folds like a standard wheelchair.  was great because we didn't need a specil car/van to get around.  (We got the chair for $150.00 we needed to get new batteries but thats it.

Hope this helps some.
