Anybody out there also suffering from severe anxiety..possibly as a result of MS

By tekteach Wednesday, December 23, 2009

Lately I feel like I am losing my mind.. I have seen a psychiatrist and have been put on meds for some major anxiety.. I don't know how to make sense of this.. I am a strong person, mother of three young children, and I have a full time job which is demanding.  Just wondering if there is anyone out there who feels the same way??

Hi tekteach,

Couple of months ago I wrote Mental Health and MS: Anxiety Disorders.  Check out the comments and you will find others diagnosed with MS who have experienced large levels of anxiety.  It seems to be a more common phenomenon than the "pubished literature" implies.  But know that you are not alone in your experience.

Hi Tekteach:

Thanks for putting this post up because I'm currently dealing with the same thing! I had a physical earlier this month and the dr told me I was having heart palpitations. I said I was feeling pretty anxious at work and she prescribed an anti-depressant to help with the anxiety. I read the warnings on the drug though which sounded terrible -- so I haven't started the drug yet.

I don't have a really stressful job but I'm struggling lately to keep up, which makes me anxious. My anxiety seems out of kilter with the stress, however. I've dealt with much more stress in the past! I seem to have lost a coping mechanism.

I had not related this to MS so I was very interested to read Lisa's link here and all the comments there too. Like others, I did have an episode like this just a few months before my diagnosis so now I'm wondering if there is a lesion that corresponds with this.

Tekteach, you are not alone. And I appreciate not feeling alone as well.

Thanks for asking the question and sharing your experience.  and thanks Lisa for posting the link.  I intend to check it out.  When there was a discussion of the MS laughing and crying, I found out that quite often psychiatrists will misdiagnose this neurological symptom as manic depression or some other kind of psychiatric disorder. I was seeing a psychiatrist for awhile.  I stopped seeing her because she did not seem to want to learn anything about what I was learning about how MS often causes depression, anxiety, inappropriate laughter etc.  I also found that some anti depressants made my breathing problems worse (constant yawning and trying to catch my breath).  Some anti-depressants left me too exhausted to get off the floor.  I found the most effective drug was diazepam taken when I experienced panic attacks. I also was told by my occupational therapist that when your balance is off your brain will often make you sit down by causing you to feel a panicky feeling in your gut. This feeling is, according to my OT therapist, often accompanied by nausea.  I am trying to get my neurologist to recommend a new psychiatrist that is experienced treating people with MS.  No luck so far.
