Visiting the Neurologist: The Importance of Check Ups

By Gina Gunkel, Health Guide Tuesday, March 25, 2008
Once again, I was reminded of the importance of MS maintenance. The value of not postponing doctor visits because "I feel fine". Recently, I noticed a lingering burning smell in my basement by my water heater. My husband suggested that we get our home's chimney swept. What I t...

Gina,

I have never postponed my doctors visits, however, I almost postponed the initial neurologist appointment because the flare up hade gone away.

And I just want to emphasize the importance of NOT postponing the blood work especialy when you are taking one of the ABCRTs or others. A friend of mine postponed his blood work when he first went on Avonex and his liver was BAD. I can't say I have been the best at getting the bloodwork done on time in the past. I mean, who wants more needles stuck in you when you have to take one of the meds? Actually usually I get the blood work done right before the doctors visit where I have to get a refill. Otherwise, if I didn't get it done, the doctor won't refill my prescription. But after my friend being so affected by the Avonex, (he's ok, but he was off meds for awhile until his liver counts improved, and then it was only Copaxone he was allowed on), I am getting the bloodwork done when the doctor says to do it. Especially since I started the Rebif. I am assuming (and praying) that because I was ok with the Interferon-A in Avonex, I'll be ok with Rebif, but you know what they say about assumptions.

Thanks for the post. A good reminder for us all.

Kristin
