Not Everything is MS - When a Lump on the Head is "Normal"

By Lisa Emrich, Health Guide Thursday, April 28, 2011
That is one of the first things my neurologist told me early on….not every health problem is caused by multiple sclerosis.  In a story he shared to illustrate his point, he told of a patient who spent an entire weekend doing yard work and cleaning out her garage.  The patient was not...

Haha that's a great post! It's Tanya from http://unhasty.com here. I'm sorry that I'm snickering at your pain, but I totally do the same thing. Everytime any little thing comes up, from tiredness to body stiffness to headaches to typical cold and flu stuff, my first reaction is to wonder if it's MS related. It's as if I forgot that I had colds or flues or headaches before I had MS. I have to remind myself that it's possible to have other stuff going on with my body!

Hi Lisa! Oh, I have so been there -- kind of dazed and confused and wondering how, exactly, I ended up on the floor, whether from a faint or a fall. :) This is probably TMI, but I had a leg fall asleep after spending too long on the toilet and had a similar collapse (but with my pants around my ankles!) while I tried to figure out what had happened. Until the sensation came back in my leg, which took a bit, I was all freaked out that I'd developed some horrible new symptom and was going to be paralyzed from now on.

Y'know, this is probably true for all of us with chronic illness of any type, too. In the heat of the moment, it's sometimes hard to remember that we are susceptible to all sorts of "normal" maladies and injuries. It's way too easy to just blame things on the chronic illness ...

And I'm glad you're OK, despite lump on head and various sore places. It definitely could have been worse, although I know it's not fun.

Hi Lisa,

Sorry you fell. Sometimes it is difficult to decide if something is actually a tertiary pain or something totally unrelated.

There are times it doesn't really matter - you just want to deal with the pain, the numbness, or the lump on your head. Please take care of your lump.

Remember this in case it happens again. Watch the way you lay down.

Whoa, Lisa!  Isn't that our typical MS day?Laughing Just kidding.  I enjoyed reading your entry because I felt like you had Candid Camera in my house and saw me live through a similar situation!  I hope the bump on your head heals quickly and that you do not experience a fall like that again.

One thing I think of quite often is how many hip and knee replacement surgeries there are, particular in the elderly.  Being so young (ahem) I try to be careful NOW when walking.  But, like you, I know falls happen so quickly.  I don't want any bones to break; I take my calcium supplements to (hopefully) prevent brittle bones.  I'll see how that works out.

In the meantime, take good care of yourself!  Keep us posted on how you are progressively doing better!!!!!:)
